An outgoing physician should provide a short summary about a patient up-front (Bottom-Line-Up-Front) statement. This statement frames all of the information that comes next, including what the level of confidence is about what is conveyed. Collaborative cross-checks will be more appropriate when a BLUF suggests high uncertainty or the need for another perspective to make a diagnosis or treatment plan.
